Mentoring in Creative Writing: Improve your craftsmanship!

(and/or) Mentoring in Perspective Writing: Change Your Story!

IMG_0446Do You Have a Story that Needs to Be Told?
… or a Story that Needs to Be Re-Written?

I believe we are the stories we tell ourselves: as a culture, and as individuals.

Over the years, I have worked with survivors of abuse, teens with Asperger’s and autism, persecuted writers, and with homemakers who once thought their lives were small and their stories mundane.

I have seen how a change in perspective forces a change in understanding.

A narrative or a metaphor can turn a victim into a survivor, a whisper into a roar… or a roar into a lullaby.

Telling our life stories is transgressive. Our imagination is transformative.

“I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not.
I write to explore all the things I’m afraid of. ”  Joss Whedon.

Private Mentoring Sessions in Perspective Writing are not about learning grammar or sentence structure. I’m not going to provide you with a formula to write a bestseller. I will offer encouragement, writing assignments, questions and feedback that will enable you to see yourself, your relationships, and your history with fresh eyes.

New perspectives will help you guide yourself towards new, life-affirming narratives. Take yourself in the direction you choose!

Mentoring packages are 2-week arrangements:

  • A meeting each week (in person or on Skype)
  • Daily homework & daily feedback

I have been working with lyric poetry as long as I have been writing. Like so many other writers, I recognized the importance of expressive writing long before James Pennebaker began researching on the subject. While working on my masters degree, I focused on my verse memoir, and again with my PhD I looked into the role that life writing can have on mental health. However, I am not a therapist, and I do not do any kind of psychoanalysis or therapeutic counselling*. My interest is in facilitating personal development. I am a guidance counsellor and writing instructor.  You can read more about my experience with expressive writing, and what I call Perspective Writing here.

If you are interested in exploring the possibilities of perspective writing, or would like mentoring in creative writing, please contact me. I would love to hear from you.

“My Graduate Mentor, Ren Powell, offered advice and guidance that refocused my essay writing abilities, emphasizing creativity and honest discourse over argumentation. […] Ren was supportive, and her feedback was detailed and well-stated. Through her correspondences, Ren is personable, and she respects student input and agency. She rarely dictates specific “solutions” to problems in a draft; instead, she provides guidance designed to help me find the best path for my learning and writing style. She poses thoughtful ideas and questions that get me rethinking and revising in the right direction.”

James Gapinski, MFA
